If you want to create your blog, you should think carefully about which blog topic you want to write about and why.
And that even before you register a domain, install WordPress or choose a theme!
Below is a checklist of 7 questions that will show you whether you’ve found the right niche.
1. Still have a vague idea?
You most likely haven’t accessed this article without at least a vague idea of what topic to blog about.
But if you don’t have a clue, it can help focus on blogger topics that are popular at first.
These include, for example:
- to travel
- Family & children
- Animals (dogs, cats, horses, etc.)
- Online marketing
- Self-employment and online business
- Home improvement
Of course, you shouldn’t limit yourself to these subject areas.
You can start a blog on many other topics as well. However, with a big and bold but:
2. Not every topic is interesting!
Before you get started with the 7 questions, I would like to share one more truth with you that you need to hear:
“Some topics are interesting in themselves. And some don’t”.
Topics such as stars, Hollywood films, gossip, love, sex, or major sporting events are inherently interesting. They always arouse emotions.
Issues such as screws, woodchip wallpaper, or menhirs are less likely.
Unless, of course, you’re Obelix…
You might read Wikipedia articles or a single advisory article on such topics.
But they are completely unsuitable as a niche or topic for an entire blog. Or do you know a lot of people who talk passionately about screws, woodchip wallpaper, or menhirs?

3. 7 questions to help you find your topic
Most bloggers give up their blog in the first year.
There can, of course, be many reasons for this. But one of the most common is:
You chose the wrong blog topic.
To avoid that, I have put together a checklist with 7 questions for you. You can use these to judge whether you have really found the right blog topic or whether you are just shooting yourself in the leg.
Before you get started, a few words about how it works:
The first two questions are about brainstorming.
Question # 1: What topics are you an expert in?
You don’t necessarily have to have written a doctoral thesis on your topic.
You do not have to have any professional experience, a degree, or other qualifications related to your topic.
But you should have more knowledge of your topic than your target group.
That said, if your target audience is beginners, you should be more advanced. If you are more advanced, you should be a professional. And if your target audience is professionals, then you should be a master in your field.
Of course, you can also grow together with the blog and gradually acquire more knowledge and experience than your target group. But it is easier if you already have a clue.
This is also better to keep your motivation up because you get on better with your target group right from the start, and writing is even more comfortable.
- Take 10-20 minutes (it’s best to set a timer)
- Write down any topics, interests, or hobbies that you know better than average.
Question # 2: What problems can you solve with your knowledge?
Question 2 builds on question 1.
Because there’s no point in having a clue about a topic if you can’t solve problems with it.
So take a look at your list of all topics, interests, and hobbies that you know about and ask yourself:
What problem can I solve with it?
Try to research beyond your list:
- What problems do people come to you with?
- For which problems of others are you their first point of contact?
- What big problems in your private or professional life have you been able to solve for yourself?
Question # 3: Are you passionate about the blog topic?
Do you feel passionate about the topic you want to write about, and would you have no problem writing about it every day?
If so, you should be able to answer yes to at least two or three of the following questions:
- Do you read books on the blog topic?
- Do you read studies on the topic, or do you regularly read news about it?
- Have you already been to a seminar, conference, or workshop on the topic?
- Would you give a seminar or workshop yourself or give a talk about it at a conference?
- Do you spend a lot of money on the topic?
- Have you traveled far for the topic, or have you made other major efforts on it?
- Is the topic a constant in your life?
- When you talk to other people, do you keep coming back to the topic?
- Could you talk about the topic for hours without getting bored?
- Do you deal with the blog topic in any way every day?
- Would you start case studies or projects on the topic?
If you can’t answer yes to any of the questions, stay away from it, otherwise, your blog won’t go anywhere, and you’ll just waste your time.
I have already started various blogs myself, which then got lost because I lost interest in them.
Don’t make the same mistake.
Question # 4: Are you ready to post 50+ posts on the topic?
As a blogger, you won’t become famous and successful overnight even if some self-appointed gurus convey that to you.
In 2011 it took me about nine months to make a living from blogging without any previous experience. This is very fast for today’s standards.
A blog is a lot of work initially, so on the one hand, you must have the stamina to write 50, 100, or even 200 blog posts until you see visible results. If you’re not ready for this, don’t even start blogging.
Of course, you don’t have to think of content and headings for all of your future blog posts right away, but try the following:
- Grab a piece of paper and a pen
- Think of headings for 20 blog posts
- If you find it difficult to collect more than 10 ideas, you should reconsider your topic.
Question # 5: What is the easiest blog topic for you to implement?
Look at your list of potential blog topics and ask yourself:
Which of these topics could I most easily implement?
The reason for this question is simple:
If something comes easy to you, you are probably an expert at it and more likely to do it with passion.
This question is intended as a control question for questions 3 and 4.
Question # 6: Are there other successful blogs on the subject?
Why reinvent the wheel and dive into an unknown market?
If there are other successful blogs on your blog topic, that is an indication that your blog can be successful.
The easiest way to find such blogs is to search Google (e.g., “top XYZ-blog”, “bester xyz-blog”, “best known xyz-blogs” etc.).
You can see whether a blog is successful. For example, can be recognized by the following characteristics:
- many fans and followers on Facebook (10,000+), Instagram (5,000+), Twitter (2,500+) etc.
- high visibility on Google (1,500+ on Searchmetrics )
- high visitor numbers (20,000+ unique visitors or 25,000+ page views per month, see data in the media kit or on the “About Us” page, also recognizable by an Alexa Rank of less than 1 million)
- high prices for sponsored posts (500 € or more)
- 1,000 € profit or more per month (only recognizable if published by the blogger himself)
- 200+ published blog posts
- It has existed for two or more years
Of course, these are only rough guidelines that have to be met for a blog and considered successful.
In addition, the weighting of the individual characteristics is also somewhat in the eye of the beholder. For some, the monthly profit plays a bigger role than the range.
Question # 7: Can you make money on the topic?
This question deliberately does not come at the very beginning. Whether you can earn money with a topic is important but still secondary.
Of course, you can also be successful with a blog if your only concern is money.
But your visitors will notice if you just want to sell them something. It runs like a red thread through everything you write, and at some point, your visitors lose interest because of it.
And you will notice it too, because just writing about something for the money is ultimately not incredibly fulfilling.
It is different when you are passionate about a topic. Then your blog is not only a means to an end but also a means of self-realization.
But back to answering the actual question:
You can make money on many topics. The question is how much and with a lot of effort.
Some topics, such as Congratulations, song texts, recipes, or quotes can only be turned into money with a high reach and displayed banner advertising.
Niches can either sell your products or advertise other companies’ products is usually easier to monetize.
To do this, you can check the following:
- Are there already many products or services related to your blog topic?
- What is the margin on the products?
- Are there affiliate programs in this area, and what are the fees?
- Are there companies that book sponsored posts on the topic?
- Are there many product-related search terms in the area on Google (e.g., can you check with a keyword tool)?
- Do you advertise these keywords?
- Would your target audience pay money to solve a specific problem?
